Active Schools

Active Schools - encouraging New Zealand children to choose and enjoy physical activity.

Active Schools is a Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC) initiative to help address the research that indicates overall physical activity levels of children are declining. Research shows that physical activity can benefit children physically, socially and mentally.

Active Schools stemmed from the tripartite agreement between SPARC, Regional Sports Trusts and the Ministry of Education (School Support Services). These organisations work together to achieve the common goal of improving student's hauora/wellbeing.

The Active School's Facilitator can link schools with the School Support Services Health and PE Advisor for curriculum support.

Active Schools aims to assist school communities in developing a positive physical activity culture where children choose and enjoy FUN physical activities.

Active Schools is underpinned by 3 key messages and the Active Schools Facilitators work with schools to:

provide child centred physical activity
take ownership to create and sustain an active environment and offer programmes that enhance physical activity
become part of, and contribute to, an active community - consistent messages and quality experiences encourage children into lifelong participation.

Mel Shearer, Sport Marlborough's Active Schools Facilitator, supports each school to achieve their individual goals. Together they aim to create sustainable physical activity opportunities for students.
